WRAITH

Prinie’s soft lips stretch upward, but don’t quite reach her darkened eyes. Even with the happiness she’s trying to exude, her eyes give away the sadness behind them. They tell me the forced expression is all for show. Even if she’s trying to fool herself, the precious dimple which crinkles in the side of her cheek is something that makes my heart skip a beat. I know she’s confused by what just happened. I should open up, but I don’t want to tell her that it came seconds away from me choking her again, and I know if that happened, she could be done with me for good. Even though I’m not sure we can ever be anything, the idea of never talking to her again scares me more.

Prinie reaches out, grabbing my hand in hers, even after my weirdness. “Thank you for the party, Wraith. The club needs this.”

I nod my head, tightening my hand in hers, then move past her for the door.

She’s right.

The club needs something to celebrate, but I don’t know if this is all a little premature.

Leaving her room, I hesitate outside the door, wanting more than anything to turn back around, to go back in and finish what I started, but I can’t. I was barely in control in there. So, I head downstairs toward the chapel. I’m fucking glad I was able to focus myself. I might have some explaining to do if she asks me about the ‘show me something blue’ thing, and whether I tell her is something I’ll need to think about. In the meantime, I have more important shit to do.

Walking to the chapel, I don’t hesitate to enter, swinging open the door and stepping inside to a heavy discussion taking place.

All eyes turn to me.

Texas stops talking mid-sentence, his eyes dart to me then he starts again. “So, it’s true, pres? Zero’s okay?”

I close the door behind me, moving into the seat I don’t want to sit in at the head of the table. “Yeah, he’s all right for now. He’s in the medical ward of the jail under protection. In recovery. As far as I know, he should recover. Perhaps Ethan has eyes on him. Though, we can’t understand why for the life of us Ethan stepped in.”

Everyone turns to Kevlar.

“Ethan did this?” Texas scoffs.

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure Ethan did something. I’m gonna call him after this meeting to confirm, but I believe he stepped in.”

“Who would have thunk it?” Texas sits back in his chair and shakes his head like he’s as shocked as I was when I found out.

“This is all the details we have. Zero’s alive. He’s in recovery. Even though we thought he had no one with eyes on him, it’s just not the case. The girls want to celebrate by having a small, low-key party today in honor of Zero, and I agreed.”

“We’re havin’ a party?” Ax asks. I dip my head in answer. “Well, that’s greater than an armadillo in cowboy boots.
